Like you, we find Nantucket a very special place. We‰۪ve been visiting the island for more than 25 years, staying in town, in Sconset, on Cliff Road, and Cisco, until we finally bought our own home in Tom Nevers in 2014. Wanting to be a part of the community, we created The Lily Project and A Walk Around Nantucket as a way to share our love of the island and give back through the Community Foundation for Nantucket, benefitting important local organizations.åÊ
Adult coloring books have become a popular way to relieve stress and calm down in our digital world of instant gratification. We hope that A Walk Around Nantucket will help visitors and residents alike tap into their inner artist, slow down, and see the island in a new way. The postcards included at the end of the book will let you send your vision out to your friends, opening their eyes to our beautiful little island.
So, sit down, turn your phones and computers off, and take ‰ÛÏa walk around Nantucket‰ with your colored pencils, markers, watercolors, or any other medium.
Paul‰۪s drawings for A Walk Around Nantucket include a representation of his ‰ÛÏGoing on the Whale‰ sign and one of his prize-winning designs for the Boston Pops. Jean‰۪s understanding of graphic design and composition have informed Paul‰۪s work here, and it is her folk-art painting that brings color to Paul‰۪s carved signs on Nantucket. Now, it‰۪s your turn!
Paul McCarthy‰۪s and Jean Petty‰۪s signs and carvings are as iconic as the scenes they have created for A Walk Around Nantucket. From the Brotherhood sign and the ‰ÛÏGoing on the Whale‰ sign that hangs above the Whaling Museum‰۪s entrance to many of the quarterboards that decorate our Nantucket homes and businesses, Paul and Jean cover the island with charm and a specific ‰ÛÏNantucket Style.‰ Paul has won the T-Shirt design contest for the Boston Pops on Nantucket for three years in a row. A visit to their Nantucket Carving & Folk Art studio and gallery at 167 Orange Street is a trip back in time to see work done by hand, in a traditional American way.
